Will Cannabis Genetics Be Banned?<

How To Correctly Store Cannabis Seeds

Cannabis seeds, with their tough outer shell, seem pretty hardy. And while nature has definitely designed them to hold up a wide variety of conditions, cannabis seeds aren’t invincible. Quick changes in temperature and high humidity, for example, can quickly ruin collections of seeds. Luckily, caring for your seeds is simple. Keep reading to find out how.

Your Seeds Are Still Alive

Lots of people forget this, but it’s real: your cannabis seeds are living organisms. Before they germinate, however, they are in dormant rest, just like some animals when they sleep. And like all life forms, seeds can die. When preserving your seeds, you’ll want to provide them the best conditions to ensure they remain viable until you’re ready to germinate and plant them.

Perfect Conditions for Cannabis Seeds

Cannabis seeds have four main enemies:

  1. Humidity
  2. Temperature
  3. Light
  4. Oxygen

Preferably, you want to keep your seeds in cool, dark, and arid place. Whenever possible, keep your seeds in their original packaging. At Royal Queen Seeds, we’ve specially designed our packaging to safeguard our seeds until you’re ready to germinate them.

If your seeds get hit by light or quick changes in temperature, these conditions will cause them to consume their food reserves before they ever touch soil, https://nativesusa.com/ [https://nativesusa.com] meaning they won’t have the food they need to grow. High humidity, on the flip side, can trigger fungi to form on your seeds.

Effects of Humidity on Cannabis Seeds

Humidity is easily one of the greatest threats to your seeds. Here is how various levels of humidity (% relative humidity) influence your cannabis seeds:

Ranges of Relative Humidity Influence of Humidity on Cannabis Seeds
80 – 100% Seeds sprout.
40 – 60% Seeds boost respiration and seed storage fungi become significant problem.
20 – 30% Temporary storage.
18 – 20% Medium-term storage.
12 – 14% Extended storage.
8 – 9% Lower longevity than seeds stored at slightly higher humidity.

Storage Methods to Store Your Cannabis Seeds

For brief storage, dark cupboard or drawer with consistent temperatures is usually fine. Try to keep your seeds away from areas of your house that are prone to the normal temperature changes of your area environment.

If, for example, you are in a region with very hot daytime temperatures and cold nights, try to shield your seeds from these changes and don’t place them outside in garages or garage.

For prolonged storage, it’s ideal to keep your seeds with desiccants, such as silica gel, in an airtight container inside the fridge. Remember that using the door of your fridge can actually create some pretty dramatic temperature shifts. If you own have a second fridge that gets used less often than the one in your kitchen, choose that one to keep your seeds.

Again, if possible, keep your seeds in their factory packaging. If you do unseal a pack of seeds and have remaining seeds, transfer the additional seeds directly into sealed container.

Ziplock bags, for example, are great because you can eliminate all the air from them to create nearly vacuum-sealed container for your seeds. Once sealed, put your bag inside a dark plastic bag or dark container to guard your seeds from your fridge light.

Moisture-free fridges are the top choice to store seeds. The problem is when there is dampness in the fridge, since humidity is the most dangerous enemy for seeds (more dangerous than temperature, light, oxygen…). For this reason, it is recommended to store the seeds in No Frost fridges.

Can You Keep Seeds in the Freezer?

Yes, cannabis seeds can be preserved in the freezer. The colder the temperature, the more gradually they decline. However, it’s generally not essential to freeze your seeds. Maintain the conditions we detailed above, and you should be able to keep your seeds for up to half a decade and still get a high germination rate.

Determining Which Seeds to Grow and Which to Store

When you’re ready to sprout your seeds, inspect them and germinate any seeds with issues to the outer shell first. The outer shell of your seeds is built to protect the delicate genetics inside. Seeds with breaks in the outer shell are a lot more vulnerable and shouldn’t be stored.

At Royal Queen Seeds, we excel in our work and want to make sure every grower only has the finest genetics in their garden. That means we examine all of our seeds before packaging. If you notice any damage to your RQS seeds, reach out with our help team immediately.

Tips for Germinating Old Cannabis Seeds

We’ve all discovered an odd seed somewhere at the bottom of forgotten drawer or cupboard. Here are several tips on how to sprout weed seeds:

Soaking with enriched carbonated water

Before germinating your old seeds, try submerging them in carbonated water fortified with fulvic acid, enhancers, hydrogen peroxide, or gibberellic acid. For best results, use lukewarm water and soak your seeds for 12 hours in dim place.

Scratch your seeds

Aged seeds often have extremely tough outer shell. Gently scratching this shell with fine sandpaper can help humidity and warmth enter your seed at the time of germination. Try gently scarring your old cannabis seeds just before soaking to help them grow.

Eliminate a seed’s ridge

The ridge is the somewhat elevated side of your seed. Like sections of the shell, this ridge can become extra tough over time. Eliminating it gently with a sharp Stanley blade can help your seed grow.

Score open your seed

In a last attempt to grow your seeds, creating a small cut in the shell may help. However, this is no magic solution, and you’ll need to be gentle to avoid hurting the inside of your seed. If you damage the embryo, the seed will never sprout.

Remember, some old seeds just won’t germinate no matter how much you try. If possible, avoid getting more seeds than you intend to plant so as to avoid having any issues at the time of germination.
